The objective was to come up with a concept for a new magazine.
I chose to create a niche magazine about print and pattern. Because I titled the current issue’s theme Get Wise to Pattern, I chose to design spreads using images that would show pattern being used or discovered in places we typically wouldn’t expect or may overlook. Pictured are the front and back covers, and selected spreads from the publication.
I discovered a photograph of Adam Courtney wearing this shirt he created for his art piece Religion Narrative.
I wanted to have a striking cover image for the issue, so I clipped his neck out of the image to give it even more intrigue and used its scale and placement to demand attention.

I found an article online about laser cut seaweed and set out to create this spread featuring the patterns created by Umino Hiroyuki of Umino Seaweed Shop in collaboration with the ad agency I&S BBDO.

I find the patterns that Ariana Page Russell creates on her flesh and then documents through her art fascinating so I designed this spread around one of her images and quotes from her website. I altered an additional image of hers to create the background pattern.

I wanted to create a spread that shows how pattern is always available to us if we learn to see it. I chose to use these National Geographic photos and the hexagon pattern to mimic a pattern that could be found in nature.

This spread is about capturing pattern through photography. Brent Stirton's photographs contain many patterns in saturated colors so I chose to design this layout with a vibrant overall pattern that contained his patterned images. My intent was to give the content of his photos less significance, letting the patterns within them gain significance and contribute to the overall pattern of the spread.

I wanted the back cover to have a lot of white space with an arrow coming from the spine that contains the number for the next issue. The back cover would contain only one image that would be featured in the next issue. After deciding the next issue would be titled 3D Patterns, I found a photo from a Guerra De La Paz installation and created a clipping path for the seated figure. I placed him on a blue-green oval to tie in with the issue number circle and created the 3D letters to mirror the box the figure is sitting upon.
